Miami Boat Show shows quality traffic

The 2012 Progressive Insurance Miami International Boat Show & Strictly Sail attracted 100,917 visitors from around the world – down 3 percent from 2011, when 102,374 attended the five-day show, which ended Monday.

Similar to what our industry has been seeing at boat shows across the country, the National Marine Manufacturers Association is hearing reports of strong, quality traffic and an increase in sales since the economic downturn.

At the Viking & Princess display where I worked, there was a great selection of Express and Flybridge series boats from 42 to 85’. The weather was perfect and the crowd was upbeat. It was a great start to the year and definitely got everybody juices flowing for the upcoming boating season.

Big turnout for July 23rd pig roast & cookout

On July 23rd 2011 the staff, slip customers and friends of Shady Oaks Marina joined together to put on our 1st annual summer pig roast and cookout. In spite of being in the midst of a week long heat wave the team here at the marina was able to pull together the, food, beverages, tents tables and chairs. With the mercury reaching 100 degrees the band “Assisted Living” played hits from the 50′s and 60′s along with an Elvis act during the second set. We had over 100 people in attendance including seven different groups coming by boat. Most of the Gunther family ,the original builders of the marina were in attendance including Patty and husband Jack who took the maiden voyage in the custom 16′ wooden boat the “Shady Lady”. They finished building her this month and is actually a sister ship of the “Miss Oaks” that was originally built buy her brother Tommy and father Dickie. If was great to see our old friends as well as forging new friendships on Saturday.

Thanks to everyone for coming and special thanks to those that worked all day in the scorching heat, including Donny Bowen, Stacy Hayes and Allyson Forker.

Bay Bridge Boat Show a Success

The 28^th annual Bay Bridge Boat Show wrapped up on May 1^st at the Bay Bridge Marina, and while the weather was rainy on Thursday and Sunday, the turnout was good and the mood was upbeat. We were able to reconnect with some previous clients and met a few potential new clients as well.

The Season Is Heating Up

Yacht brokers aren’t exactly dancing in the streets, but we are very optimistic about the 2011 season. The activity and buzz at last week’s Yacht Sales Collection at Chesapeake Harbour was very positive. It’s good news for everyone involved.

It isn’t just a local trend; attendance at most of the east coast winter shows was up significantly. Several key factors bode well for dealers, marinas and boaters. One is that boat loans are easier for most to secure. Banks ARE loosening the purse strings a bit. Slips at great rates are more readily available as the smoke clears from the recession. There’s still a good bit new and pre-owned inventory out there, which translates to motivated sellers and dealers willing to make some great deals. All of this is good news for the boater who is ready to make a move.

Shady Oaks Welcomes Samantha Riley

We’re pleased to introduce our new office manager, Samantha “Sam” Riley. She’s in charge of keeping the rest of us organized (good luck) and providing a friendly greeting when you call or visit the marina office.

We always remember that our slip holders come out to relax on the weekends, to get away and enjoy their boats. Sam is a key member of the team; she’ll help make sure we’re always helpful and right there to serve our boaters. After all, we want Shady Oaks to be the “home away from home” that people appreciate and enjoy.

We are excited to announce that Chuck Benning has joined our service team. A 25 year industry veteran, there is nothing boat repair related that Chuck cannot do.

Chuck worked at Shady Oaks back in the late eighties and has worked in and around the boat business for the better part of 25 years. Most recently, he was the lead rigger at Weaver Boat Builders, a local builder of custom sport fishing boats from 50″ to 85′. Please join us in welcoming Chuck to Shady Oaks.

Mid-Size Boat Sales Up Significantly

At first glance, sales figures for brokerage boats sold in the United States in March did not look promising. But closer inspection reveals that mid-size boats, 26-55 feet in length, actually surged more than 10 percent over March 2010. It seems that the larger vessels, over 55 feet both moved slower and the value of those sales took a big hit. That pulled down the overall numbers so this March appeared worse than last March. But the details show brighter news for most of us – those who live and work and play in the “mid-size” boating world. Not only did the number of boats sold increase, but so did the total value of those sales. Further signs of a healthy, growing industry are good for all of us, the brokers, the buyers and the sellers!
